The Overture By Justin Pearson 2019 165 cm x 165 cm, Oil and ink on linen The Overture- Painting 1,2,3 is a number of recurrent themes. Each one of the paintings are associated with some element of the drama and developed in conjunction with the Earth- Water and Fire elements throughout the work. These painterly themes are not mere melodic moments but they are a emotional guide throughout the paintings, a giant labyrinth with drama. A symphonic development of stage and action. A musical tone in an image. A quiet emotional owe. In his studio work, Justin has been working on a series of paintings based around J.R.R. Tolkien famous Trilogy and Richard Wagner’s ‘The Ring Cycle’. These dramatic expressive paintings depicts the themes and narratives of heroic mythology, love, loss, yearning and power. Justin is drawn to the timeless, universal themes and metaphors in both there works to comment on society, politics, power and love.
The gestural paintings depict a range of mysterious landscapes, embracing dark figures of moral ambiguity and distorted features whilst others are celebrations of heroic strength and uprisings. They are fantastical images celebrating Rhine maidens, Gods and evil forces and feelings which are all too human in nature. As a studio painter, Justin celebrates these seductive themes in thick, rich oil paint, which dances and swirls on its canvas or board surface.
